How do people manage living on benefits especially if they have to travel?

I am a single mom of one child. I need to take one year gap of work and was recommended Income Support and Housing Benefits. I dont know if this going to be ok as I do travel to see my family every 6 months-year. Is it possible to save money from benefits to travel ?? I dont have saving and was told that I can get around 拢600 a month! How do people manage living on benefits especially if they have to travel?Hi there,

It is possible you can get a Mobility Bus Pass. I don't know if it is the same for different regions but I live in South Yorkshire and here you can get them for Anxiety, Depression and Asthma. Ignore the "Criteria" list. DON'T go on that alone like many fools do. It's down to the Council's discretion (which is who issues the Pass).

Don't let ANYONE on here tell you that I am talking excrement because I am not. All you need to do is Download a form... (Google [Your Area] and "Mobility Bus Pass Form"). Then if you do have Asthma, you will need a letter from your GP and if you have Depression and/or Anxiety either get your Doctor to stamp the form or your local Mental Health Team or again, obtain a letter.

Yes, you will be able to claim Income Support, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and if you don't already claim this... Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits.

Kind regards,

You can only claim benefits if you are actively seeking work, the obligation to sign on as a single parent was introduced some time ago. In addition, if you were in employment and voluntarily gave it up, you would be barred from receiving any benefits for 6 months in any event. In addition you automatically lose benefits if you leave the country for more than 14 days. How do people manage living on benefits especially if they have to travel? They don't live they just exist. Barely. And we now have free travel with the buses, trams and trains. Well the ones who are pensioned off.

You can save money while on benefits but it takes years to accumulate a decent amount. And it doesn't really go that far in the end. Claim all that your entitled to and don't be shy to do it.

I apologise for the generalisation of the 'Black economy', very few resort to this. Because most people are honest and hardworking.

..You need to get proper advice...you cant claim unless you are genuinely in need...and you have to notify the benefits office if you're going abroad as you wont be available for work on those dates. Also, ...please check the amount that you'll get ...what you have been quoted sounds rather high...the father will have to pay a bit towards it...get in ciontact with the c.a.b. ...a.s.a.p.How do people manage living on benefits especially if they have to travel? If you are on benefits, taking tax payer money, you should not be traveling and taking a "gap year". You can't get benefits if you willingly quit a job and aren't right away looking for another one.How do people manage living on benefits especially if they have to travel?
They don't. If you can afford the luxery of travel, you should not be receiving tax payers money. Why should we pay for your travel when most of the people paying for it can't afford to take a vacation at all?
No. If you are too poor to live you shouldn't have extra money to vacation. How do people manage living on benefits especially if they have to travel?
I can tell you now, (as I care full time for my partner who is ill and we both live on benefits until my partner can go back to work) You can't!

Any benefit money you get will go to paying rent, paying bills and food and clothing. You will not have enough to pay for expensive travel.

Myself and partner get the bus every week to hospital appointments (even if that bus takes 3 hours) because we cannot afford 2 tube tickets 3 times a week!

Unless your family live in the UK and you can get cheap coach tickets, then you won't be able to afford to see them.

If myself and partner want to visit relatives outside of London, we have to save up a little money every month, eat within our food budget and look for the cheapest coach tickets and get the bus to the coach station and back again.

If it's cheaper to walk somewhere, we will!

We pack our own food for the journey and can only do this a few times a year.

Benefits are basic living!

We manage, but have to be very strict on our budget! ALL bills get paid first. Anything else is a bonus.
