How long will it take to travel upstream?

A boat can travel 5kph upstream in still water, how long will it take to travel 5km upstream, if the water is moving 1km/hr downstream?How long will it take to travel upstream?The velocity of the boat relative to an observer on the side of the river is 4km/hr. If it moves up 5km/hr the river pushes it back 1km/hr 5km/hr - 1km/hr = 4km/hr

Now it simply becomes a problem of plugging in the values.

velocity = distance / time

4km/hr = 5km / time

time = 5/4 hours.

which is 1.25 hours.

Which is also, 1 hour and 15 minutes.
