Can I Travel With Portuguese Passport but Expired Green Card?

Does anyone know if I will have problems leaving and reentering the US with a expired green card? I am planning to travel to Germany in January 2010 for 2 weeks and I only have a Portuguese passport and Portuguese ID card. My green card expired several years ago and it takes up to a year to renew. When you try to fly back to the U.S., the carrier is going to check your documents. When they see that your green card is expired, they have the option of denying boarding privileges to you. If they refuse to let you board, you'll be stuck in Germany.



The airline is going to be afraid of a $3300 fine for bringing a passenger with invalid documents. They may instruct you to go to the U.S. consulate for a travel letter for which there is a fee.



You'll miss your flight and have to stay at least one extra night and pay a fee for the travel letter. If you don't mind going through that aggravation, then you can skip applying to renew your card.

About traveling, when you apply to renew it you can ask for a temporal permit which will allow you to come back it.
