Can we travel to the Bahamas with a Certificate of Indian Staus card?

We are native americans with a status card from the department of indian affairs in Canada. We use this to travel back and forth across the american/canadian border and have flown within the US with it, but we were wondering if anyone could help us figure out if we can fly to the Bahamas with it? (We live and were born in the US, lived in Canada at one point as well). Can someone please help us? The number I try to call in the bahamas doesn't help. Can we travel to the Bahamas with a Certificate of Indian Staus card? The United States requires that any time you cross a border by air you need a passport. Furthermore, every American citizen requires a passport to reenter the United States by ground or air.

The Canadian Indian Status Card is being replaced with a "US approved" travel document, the "Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS)". Basically it's a passport for "Status Indians". Also under the same rules as a passport, a person can be denied a "Secure Certificate of Indian Status".

The United States currently will accept the old "Status Card" for travel between Canada and the US by ground until the SCIS is fully implemented.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) final rules require travelers to present a passport or other approved secure document denoting citizenship and identity for all travel into the United States. WHTI establishes document requirements for travelers entering the United States who were previously exempt, including citizens of the U.S., Canada and Bermuda.
