How far in advanced should you buy flight tickets for international travel? Or when do prices really spike?

I am planning to travel from the United States to either Brazil or Guatemala in June. Right now plane tickets range from $900 to $1600. How many months before the travel date do the prices stay within the lower range? How far in advanced should you buy flight tickets for international travel? Or when do prices really spike? There is no right/wrong answer to this question. Airlines constantly change fares and for international travel if you do not book in advance there is always a chance the flight will become very expensive.

Best advice is to check frequently and use a fare monitoring website like www.kayak.com or www.sidestep.com.

Also, if your dates of travel are flexible and you do a Tues/Weds departure flights become a little cheaper.

Safe travels!
