What is quickest and cheapest way to travel by land from Rome to Venice to Milan?

Travel must be on land, by bus, train, etc. Does anyone know the quickest and cheapest way to get form city to city? I only have one day to spend in each of the three cities. What is quickest and cheapest way to travel by land from Rome to Venice to Milan?Train!!!What is quickest and cheapest way to travel by land from Rome to Venice to Milan?Train. The trains in Italy are cheap, reliable and a good way to get about. There are different kinds of service in Italy, but the main operator and ticket seller is Trenitalia at www.trenitalia.com. There are domestic and regional and inter-regionall trains which are slower and there are international and intercity/ Alta Velocita routes which are much faster. Trenitalia sells tickets for all routes and is usually cheaper then using another service like Rail Europe. Florence to Rome is about $88 from Rail Europe in advance, from Trenitalia about $45. Booking in advance will also get you discounts. Tickets are 'biglietti' and you may want 'solo andante' (one way) or ritorno. You MUST validate tickets for travel on all public transport in Italy or be liable for a fine. There are useful bits of info here

A fast train still requires significant travel time though. Note that you can save a bit by buying tickets in advance. There is a 15% discount for at least 7 day advance purchase and 30% for at least 15 day. Other promotions are sometimes available. There are a limited number of discounted seats on a given train and they tend to sell out pretty fast.

One option for the Rome - Venice trip is the night train. While a fast train takes a little under 4 hours and costs 73 euro at the undiscounted rate, the night train takes a lot longer (almost 7 hours), but you can sleep through the night on the train. This is cheaper than the fast train and allows more sightseeing time in Venice.
