Trenitalia sells tickets for all routes and is usually cheaper then using another service like Rail Europe. Florence to Rome is about $88 from Rail Europe in advance, from Trenitalia about $45. Booking in advance will also get you discounts. Tickets are 'biglietti' and you may want 'solo andante' (one way) or ritorno. A fast train still requires significant travel time though. Note that you can save a bit by buying tickets in advance. There is a 15% discount for at least 7 day advance purchase and 30% for at least 15 day. Other promotions are sometimes available. There are a limited number of discounted seats on a given train and they tend to sell out pretty fast.



One option for the Rome - Venice trip is the night train. While a fast train takes a little under 4 hours and costs 73 euro at the undiscounted rate, the night train takes a lot longer (almost 7 hours), but you can sleep through the night on the train. This is cheaper than the fast train and allows more sightseeing time in Venice.
