What country is the most awakening for an American to travel to?

My boyfriend and I live in the Bay Area of California. I love to travel and learn about new cultures and other ways of living. My boyfriend has never lived elsewhere and doesn't show any interest in traveling. I've been to London, England; Edinburg, Scotland; and Paris, France and I'm going to Italy and Greece this September. I really want to take my boyfriend on an eye opening trip. Cost is not an issue. What country is the most awakening for an American to travel to?Define awakening? Do you want to awaken him to the horrors of the world? That the US isn't the only 'real' country there is? Or show him a culture that is vastly different that the Bay Area (which is some what different. Lived there my whole life)? Or show him culture and history?

Cost is no object I would say take the Trans Siberian Railroad across Asia and into Europe. You can from London to Tokyo in about 2 weeks if you don't stop for more then a few hours in a place. Getting to Japan is actually by ferry.

You can stop in numerous places in Europe, Russia, Mongolia, China, South Korea and more.

Get a private room, gets you your own bath. Would actually cost less than taking the Amtrak across the US and it's 3 times the distance.

You would meet many different people from all sorts of cultures and could make the trip quite long hitting ever country it stopped in.

It's one of the safer ways to travel about that region. The only drawback is some of the places (namely China and somewhere else) require Visas to have an exact entry date and might only be good for 24-72 hours. The process could take upwards of 3 months and might require a hotel reservation. So once you plan the trip and start there is a bit of a schedule you have to keep and train ticket are purchased for individual legs if you get off. So planning ahead is key.

If cost is truly no object I'm so down to tag along. What country is the most awakening for an American to travel to?Take him to the Iberian peninsula. Spain and Portugal are great spots and beautiful climate too.
