What is the easiest, and what is the cheapest way to travel between Athens and Istanbul?

I want to travel from Athens to Istanbul - is there a ferry direct? or is a train the easiest way? Or would it be easy enough to travel through some of the Greek/Turkish islands along the way? What is the easiest, and what is the cheapest way to travel between Athens and Istanbul?I suggest you if you are in Athens just the plane, it is 1.30 h.not so much and direct. The train goes directly to Istanbul from Thessaloniki.

From the greek islands it is more complicated, it depends where you are and where you want to go.I give you an example:I live in Rhodes. My island from Marmaris is 50 minuts with the katamaran. But then from Marmaris if i want to go to Istanbul, i need about 10-12 hours with the bus.So it is better to leave from Athens isnt it?

Never forget also, that during the travel with bus, train, boat, you spend money.Never forget the double tickets you ll do for the bus too..

So, the plane it is more convenient, be sure..What is the easiest, and what is the cheapest way to travel between Athens and Istanbul?
Depends on how you travel to Athens. Olympic Airways use to have a deal that they'd supply you a complimentry ticket. Don't know if its still in effect.

Catching the Intercity train is probably the cheapest though. Takes about 4 hours to Thessaloniki (highly recommend stop over) and from there if memory serves me right, approx. another 5-6 hours to Istanbul. What is the easiest, and what is the cheapest way to travel between Athens and Istanbul?Easiest: fly by aeroplane.

Cheapest: possibly to go by bus or train via Thessaloniki, but you will spend a lot of time and trouble, plus you may need to pay a hotel because it will take more than a day.

Through a Greek island, it is possible and it will be interesting to visit the island too, like Chios or Kos, but it will be much more time, trouble and perhaps money to go around and stay in hotels and take ferries etc. Do it only if you are interested to visit the island and the ancient Greek archaeological sites on the coast of Turkey. What is the easiest, and what is the cheapest way to travel between Athens and Istanbul?
Hello!

Well, are there any time constraints?

If not, you could go by surface transport. Make stops, admire the environment, antiquities, people, all the way, both in Greece and Thrace.

If there are time constraints, get a plane and enjoy the 1.5 hr flight. What is the easiest, and what is the cheapest way to travel between Athens and Istanbul? You can take the train from Larissa Station. I think the price is about 80 euros. What is the easiest, and what is the cheapest way to travel between Athens and Istanbul?
Bus will be a cheap and easy way for ging to istanbul. It will be about 22 hours and cost about 60 euros for one way. The Greek firm OSE works in co-operation with the Turkish firms. It comes from the Larissa station as i remember. Train is ok, but if you'll have too much luggage it will be harder because you'll change train.
Ah ah ah I love the answer of Spartan !!

How long did it take a ship to travel from Philadelphia, Pa to England in the 18th century?

Also, due to the trade winds, what months could a passenger ship leave the colonies to travel to England? How long did it take a ship to travel from Philadelphia, Pa to England in the 18th century?leaving FROM Philly to England could be done any time of year.it was Ben Franklin, in fact who figured out that not only to the prevailing winds blow from west to east up at those latitudes, but there was an ocean current that went that way too. We now know it as the Gulf Stream.

There are a whole bunch of qualifiers to tis answer but.....with good winds and the Gulf Stream a typical colonial era passenger ship could do about 150-200 miles in a day. It's about 3500 miles from Cape Henlopen to London, so 17 days for an exceptional passage and 30 for a good one.

Now light winds or winds from the east and 60 days would not be uncommon.......

I would like to travel from the US to Cuba in december. Does anyone have any good travel advice?

I am specifically looking for good travel companies to book through and any good suggestions on where to stay. I am interested in mid-level places. Preferably in the Havana area.I would like to travel from the US to Cuba in december. Does anyone have any good travel advice? My brother works in Tourism there ,the hotels they qualify as 4 stars are not even 2 star to US standars , due to the US embargo there are no companies in the US to book any package to travel to Cuba... It is punishable by law to spend US dollars on vacation packages to Cuba for a US citizen or resident.

Use this website from Canada instead if you are really interested into travelling there,

    http://www.searstravel.ca/sts/home.do

To flight over there you will need to do it from a third country if you do plan on travelling without the Us permit to go there: Mexico City, Cancun , Bahamas, Jamaica , they all can be used to go to Cuba.

Hotels you might try in Havana City with decent accomodations are mostly located in Old Havana which is the best part to see in Havana

    Telegrafo Hotel

    NH Parque Central Hotel

    Santa Isabel Hotel

You can also use a website that I used myself, this one is directly from Cuba:

    http://vacacionartravel.com/default.asp

And yes you might think that not drinking the water may be a joke or not polite , but is true , buy bottle water , there is plenty over there, do not bring US bank Credit cards as they will not be accepted there for the same reason I gave at the beguining of my answer, US embargo. bring cash , and be ready to drop 20% of every US dollar you spend there , as there is a new law in Cuba since 2004 which charges a 10 % penalty to every us dollar and a 10% tax.I would like to travel from the US to Cuba in december. Does anyone have any good travel advice?
dont drink the waterI would like to travel from the US to Cuba in december. Does anyone have any good travel advice?if you are planning on going through Canada a good company to book through is Selloff Vacations, they handle all the major Canadian travel wholesalers, Transat, Sunwing, signature Tours etc. Check the offerings on their web site, then you can look at the reviews on trip Advisor. Enjoy Cuba, it's wonderful. By the way, you can drink the water straight from the tap although most resorts will provide free bottled water and the beer and rum are great.I would like to travel from the US to Cuba in december. Does anyone have any good travel advice?
if you are an American citizen it is illegal for you to travel to Cuba......you do know that, right?

Cuba has been embargoed by the US since 1962....whether there is a conservative Republican or a liberal Democrat in the White House, ALL have seen something bad about American citizens spending money in a dictatorship......a dictatorship where thousands of Cubans have risked death tubing across the Florida Straights rather than live in tyranny..

so why would you want to go there?

Now some Americans sneak in via Mexico or Canada.....and if you are caught coming back, you are in a world of troubleI would like to travel from the US to Cuba in december. Does anyone have any good travel advice?Stay in the hotels, you would get a better stay there. I do not suggest drinking the water straight from the tap though. I myself am a student of a university in Cuba, stayed in Havana a few months b4 i went to other areas and there is a lot of cases of stomach flu, worms and other "bathroom problems". If you are going to experience Cuba, do not stay in Havana, there is a lot more to see. Tips for Cuba: they would scam you of your dollar, so be smart. And as the lady said above, US based credit cards are not accepted. I use a caribbean based visa credit card. The best advise for the US dollar is to change it to Euros then on the airport in Cuba change the euros to pesos. Also, don't forget to hold on tight to your belongings. Things that are not readily available to them (eg. american products) they would probably want. Enjoy!!

What kind of boat would one need to travel across an ocean?

I know little to nothing about boats.

But I am very interested in them and have taken hobby to studying them recently. What I could not find, anywhere on the world wide web, is what kind of boat (as specific as possible) one would need to travel across an ocean.

I mean for personal use, (not a cruise ship), for anywhere around 5-15 people. If you know of several types, that would be helpful as well!
